PARacingOnline.com Presents - Project
Street Stock
with Garry Ankrom Motorsports and
Eiford Racing
Welcome
back to PARacingOnline.com's Project
Street Stock. It has been a couple of
weeks since our street stock chassis was
delivered to Eiford's Garage in
Scottdale, PA and this week we were
finally able to get started. By looking
at the pictures, you can see that the
chassis had spent quite some time
outside and had been a bit abused by
Mother Nature. The plan for right now is
pretty straight forward. Start by
getting the chassis and all attached
components cleaned up and inspected.
Since there is so much to do, this week
we decided to focus on the front of the
car first.
We started
by pulling the calipers and rotors to
see if they were any good. We were in
luck! The rotors, although rusty, were
still in really good shape. Ronnie
cleaned them up by using a wire brush to
knock down the rust, then after a some
cleaning, sprayed them with a high heat
flat black spray paint. Once dry, Ron
put them on the brake lathe and cut them
down. I was impressed with the fact that
once they were done, the rotors looked
brand new.

While they
were working on the brakes, I worked on
removing the lone sway bar link, which
brings up a good point. We need a sway
bar. I also worked on cleaning the
surface of the chassis so that we could
prep it for paint. Ron went through and
inspected
all of the steering and braking
components and tightened all of the nuts
and bolts. Everything seems to be in
pretty good shape, with the exception of
the upper ball joints. They will have to
be replaced. Besides the missing sway
bar, we also need front shocks. Other
than that, the front suspension,
steering, and brakes look to be in good
shape. Since we had everything apart, we
took the time to paint the control arms
and spindles in order to make it look a
lot nicer. We also cleaned and painted
the calipers. Once we were finished, and
the paint was dry, we reassembled the
brakes and when we were done, it looked
like we installed all new parts. It is
pretty cool to see what you can do in
under two hours with the right tools and
knowledge. If I were doing this myself,
I would have yanked all the rusty parts
and just replaced them.
So that is
it for this week. Over the next couple
of weeks we should have the front end
completed and can move on to the rear.
Everything looks to be in pretty good
shape there as well, but we'll have to
do a complete inspection before I can
say that for sure.
Looking
beyond the building part of this
project, there is another very important
element of building a race team, that
being marketing. We have already started
this part of the project as well by
building our Team Identity Kit. This
includes our logo, business cards, our
website, and our marketing material.
Look for more announcements about this
activity in the near future. This Team
Identity Kit is the tool we will use to
gain attention and form marketing
partnerships (sponsors) and every team
should have one. If you would like help
creating your Team Identity Kit, contact
