(Smithton, PA) Veteran Barry Awtey missed practice and heat races to attend his daughter's high school graduation. As a result, he was forced to start 13th in the NASCAR Subway Super Late Model feature event, and scored an unlikely win on June 11, 2010. Other winners on Whelen Engineering Fireworks Night were Chris Brink (Wyotech Modifieds), Teddy Gibala (Napa Street Stocks), Ron Eiford, III (Pro Auto Supply Service Chargers), and Paul Koffler, Jr. (Coca Cola Super Compacts).
The 50-lap feature for NASCAR Subway Super Late Models started with Todd Price grabbing the lead from the pole position, and holding off three-time Motordrome Champ Rick Miller. On lap six, eighth place starter Garry Wiltrout vaulted from third place to the lead in less than half of one lap. Wiltrout set a torrid pace, outrunning Miller, and led for eleven laps. On lap 17, Wiltrout's teammate Bobby Henry took command of the event. The former Champion teammates were quickly separated by Mark Cottone, who started tenth and raced into second position between the Pologruto team cars. Wiltrout's handling became ill, and on lap 22, 13th place starter Barry Awtey climbed into third spot, but he was far behind the lead duo of Henry and Cottone. Until the late stages of the event, heat race winners Cottone and Henry raced bumper to bumper as they ran away from the rest of the field. On lap 46, Henry spun from the lead exiting turn four on the front stretch, setting up a Motordrome mandated double-file restart. Cottone took the green flag inside of Awtey as the field roared into the final four lap stanza, and Awtey grabbed the lead in turn one. The Jenners, PA veteran held off the defending Track Champion for his first win of 2010, aboard the Wheeler Brothers/Stoystown Auto Wrecking Chevrolet in most unlikely fashion. Awtey arrived just in time for the feature event, with a skelton crew after watching his daughter graduate from high school, forcing him to start near the rear of the field for his heat race absence. Awtey dedicated the win to a recently passed crewman Adam Dice. Cottone was second and Mark Poole was third after a spin sent him to the tail on lap 17. John Komarinski also went to the tail and placed fourth in his second race of 2010, ahead of Price in fifth.
Modified rookie Pat Hanley took the lead from veteran George Nicola at the start of the 25-lap Wyotech Modified feature event. Hanley had already led feature laps during his first season of asphalt racing, and looked stout until lap eleven when eighth place starter Chris Brink took the lead. Heat winner Brink, was the first driver to win twice in the Mods this year, but he lost the lead to Hanley on a restart on lap 18. Brink hunted down and passed Hanley again on lap 20, and went on to become the first three time winner in the division. Six time and defending Champion Adam Kostelnik made late race moves to place second - his best finish of 2010 - after starting fourth. Hanley placed third, with newlywed heat race winner Bobby Shipp fourth and young J.P. Weiser showing strength to finish fifth.
In the Napa Street Stocks, veteran Tom Knight, Sr. continues to add to an impressive total of feature laps led. He still seeks his first Motordrome win, however he led laps one through eleven of the 25-lap event Friday. Fourth starter Teddy Gibala, took the lead and dominated the field after a similarly convincing heat race win. It was the young driver's second victory of the year with sixth place starter Dustin Blank finishing second, tenth place starter Dink Colarusso finishing third, and eighth place starter Scott Aiello finishing fourth. Knight held to finish fifth, and Aiello won the other heat race.
A winner in three different divisions at age 21, Ron Eiford, III started on the pole for the 15 lap Pro Auto Supply Service Charger feature. After winning in the 'Young Guns' teen division, the Super Compacts and last year in the Chargers, Eiford ran away with the event, leading every lap to score his second career win the in the division, and first of 2010. Trailing the sophomore Charger ace at the finish were the previous event winner Denny Keller, who also won a heat race, and points leader Zane Ferrell in third. A.J. Poljak made his first start of the season and won a heat race, then placed fourth in the feature ahead of Jimmy Christofel.
Former dirt track Champion Paul Koffler, Jr. has adapted quickly to asphalt racing, as he won multiple features as a 2009 paved track rookie. He also adapted quickly to a brand new car and a new team, taking the lead from sixth starting position on lap one, and leading all the way to the finish of the 15-lap Coca Cola Super Compact feature. He also won his heat in his first start for the Quarrick team. Previous event winner Andrew Dutkewicz was second, with Koffler's son Paul, III, in third position when the checkered flag waved. Veteran Eugene 'Hillbilly' Zerfoss finished fourth, and points leader Bill Schwartz was fifth after winning his heat. Mary Catherine Shimko also won her second heat race of the year.
