Like Father like Son, Brian Sones has the Winning Touch
Submitted by Dino Oberto on Monday, June 14, 2010
As a youngster, Brain Sones spent many summers watching his father, Ken Sones, race at Sundance Vacations (Evergreen) Speedway. From 1990 to 1998 the elder Sones was a top dog racer, winning 17 features between the street stocks and thrillers classes. Through most of those seasons he was also among the title contenders. Going to the track during that period was a family affair for the entire Sones clan of Sandy Valley. Not only was dad racing but Brian, along with his brother Tim, got on track as well during intermissions with the Kids Big Wheel competitions. Fast forward to the present and the Sones are still having family gatherings at the speedway and still gracing Victory Lane as 20-year old Brian is carrying on the racing heritage.

Daniel Angelicchio Wins the Fastrak Grand Prix at PPMS
Submitted by Matt Miley on Monday, June 14, 2010
PITTSBURGH, PA - June 12, 2010 - The Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Pro Late Model Crates 25 Lap Grand Prix saw Greensburg PA's Daniel Angelicchio pick up his first win of the season and first since 2008, and his third career win. Rocky Kugel led the first three laps before Mike Pegher Jr. took over on a restart. Pegher seemed to have things under control pulling to over a straightaway over fellow two time winner this season Kyle Lukon. A caution flew on lap 15 for the stalled Justin Lamb. On the restart, Kyle Lukon took over the lead as Pegher didn't seem to have the speed he had earlier. Then suddenly on lap 17 Pegher broke a wheel coming off turn four bringing out the caution. Lukon again grabbed the lead and opened up a bit of a margin. Angelicchio moved past Rocky Kugel for second, and seem to be closing on Lukon quickly. Then on lap 21 Lukon got a flat tire slowed and brought out the yellow. On the restart Angelicchio pulled away to lead the last four laps for the win. Kugel had his best run of the season to finish second followed by Mike Reft, Dennis Niederriter, Dan Karalagas, newcomer Joel Prosser, Laura Lukon, Darrell Dow, Mark Moats Sr. (who was subbing for his son Mark Jr. who injured his arm in his heat), Ken Chernik, and newcomer Ron Smithley. Mike Pegher Jr. and Daniel Angelicchio won the heats in the Crates. Pete Loria took a wild end over end flip in the second heat on lap 2 while running third in turn two. Pete was OK.

Awtey Starts 13th and Wins First of 2010 at Motordrome
Submitted by Motordrome Speedway on Monday, June 14, 2010
(Smithton, PA) Veteran Barry Awtey missed practice and heat races to attend his daughter's high school graduation. As a result, he was forced to start 13th in the NASCAR Subway Super Late Model feature event, and scored an unlikely win on June 11, 2010. Other winners on Whelen Engineering Fireworks Night were Chris Brink (Wyotech Modifieds), Teddy Gibala (Napa Street Stocks), Ron Eiford, III (Pro Auto Supply Service Chargers), and Paul Koffler, Jr. (Coca Cola Super Compacts).
The 50-lap feature for NASCAR Subway Super Late Models started with Todd Price grabbing the lead from the pole position, and holding off three-time Motordrome Champ Rick Miller. On lap six, eighth place starter Garry Wiltrout vaulted from third place to the lead in less than half of one lap. Wiltrout set a torrid pace, outrunning Miller, and led for eleven laps. On lap 17, Wiltrout's teammate Bobby Henry took command of the event. The former Champion teammates were quickly separated by Mark Cottone, who started tenth and raced into second position between the Pologruto team cars. Wiltrout's handling became ill, and on lap 22, 13th place starter Barry Awtey climbed into third spot, but he was far behind the lead duo of Henry and Cottone. Until the late stages of the event, heat race winners Cottone and Henry raced bumper to bumper as they ran away from the rest of the field. On lap 46, Henry spun from the lead exiting turn four on the front stretch, setting up a Motordrome mandated double-file restart. Cottone took the green flag inside of Awtey as the field roared into the final four lap stanza, and Awtey grabbed the lead in turn one. The Jenners, PA veteran held off the defending Track Champion for his first win of 2010, aboard the Wheeler Brothers/Stoystown Auto Wrecking Chevrolet in most unlikely fashion. Awtey arrived just in time for the feature event, with a skelton crew after watching his daughter graduate from high school, forcing him to start near the rear of the field for his heat race absence. Awtey dedicated the win to a recently passed crewman Adam Dice. Cottone was second and Mark Poole was third after a spin sent him to the tail on lap 17. John Komarinski also went to the tail and placed fourth in his second race of 2010, ahead of Price in fifth.
